WELCOME TO FITZGIBBON MEADERY
We're a micro winery based in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania that specializes in Meads and Country (Fruit) Wines.
As Ellwood City's only Meadery, we've taken it upon ourselves to introduce our corner of Western Pennsylvania to the wonderful beverage that is Mead.
What is mead?
Basically, mead is the combination of honey, water, and yeast that has fermented into an alcoholic drink, a honey wine. But it is much more complicated than that. You can make mead with all kinds of spices and fruits (including grapes) in a multitude of combinations.
Many people think that mead must be cloyingly sweet. But just like wine, mead can have a wide range of flavors and sweetness. While many of our meads are on the sweet end of the scale, we do carry three dry meads and two semi-sweet meads.
Mead features prominently in Norse and Viking mythology but was common among other cultures, including the Greeks and Egyptians. Many historians feel that Mead in some form is the oldest know alcohol in the world.
What are Country Wines?
Country wines are akin to the usual grape wines except that they contain no grapes and instead use some other fruit as the basis for the fermentation. This includes apple, raspberry, blueberry and rhubarb wines, to name a few. We offer some country wines but have chosen to stay out of the grape wine business since there are already plenty of local places that do it well.
